Lack of Vitamin D has effects on Breast Cancer and Colon Cancer The evidence for vitamin D as a powerful cancer-preventer continues to grow at a rapid rate.
The results of two new data analyses indicate that high dietary intake of Vitamin D can cut the risk of breast and colon cancers by 50 percent.
And these results follow the findings of two studies by the same team. The research team responsible for the new data analysis and related prior investigations included the world’s leading vitamin D scientists:
The encouraging new findings fit with the same team’s prior analysis of 63 studies of vitamin D status and cancer risk.
That 2005 meta-analysis found that if people consumed more vitamin D, it could reduce their risks of breast, colon, and ovarian cancers by half.
And last December, the same group published studies showing that low exposure to sunlight is linked to higher risk of ovarian and kidney cancer. Both analyses employed previously unavailable data from a new World Health Organization database of cancer incidence, mortality and prevalence in 175 countries (GLOBOCAN).
Vitamin D and breast cancer risk The UCAL San Diego team examined data from two large epidemiological studies (the Nurses’ Health Study and the St. George's Hospital Study) which included 1,760 women.
Their analysis showed that the women with the higher blood levels of vitamin D were 50 percent less likely to have breast cancer, when compared with women with the lower blood levels.
As lead author Cedric Garland elaborated in a press release from the University of California: “The data were very clear, showing that individuals in the group with the lower blood levels had the highest rates of breast cancer, and the breast cancer rates dropped as the blood levels of vitamin D increased.”
Vitamin D versus colon cancer The multi-university team’s second meta-analysis, which looked for links between colorectal cancer and vitamin D status, encompassed five studies in which blood was drawn from 1,448 participants.
The volunteers’ blood samples were divided into five equal groups, from the lowest blood levels of vitamin D to the highest. The people with the highest blood levels had half the incidence of colon cancer, compared with those measuring the lowest vitamin D levels.
And as lead author Edward Gorham said, “We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels of of Vitamin D at 46 nanograms per milliliter [117 nmol/l], which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3.”

Vitamin D and Anti-Aging There’s been a lot of research into free radicals and the results show that they are one of the major factors behind aging.
Basically, free radical oxygen atoms will attach to the molecules of healthy tissue and interfere with the natural cellular processes. Scientists say that ageing results from the accumulation of tissue damage caused by free radical interference with cellular activity.
Antioxidants are the counter to free radicals. They bind to free radicals and reutilize them. If your body does not have sufficient calcium, it will start to produce parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH causes your body to take calcium and phosphorous from your bones. Insufficient vitamin D will weaken both your bones and teeth.

Where Does Vitamin D Come From? Vitamin D is created when ultraviolet light from the sun strikes the skin. UV light is usually only present at mid-day. Just a small change in your schedule could result in a large reduction in vitamin D. The only food that naturally contains significant Vitamin D is fish liver.
Are We Getting Enough Vitamin D? In northern areas, there is very little ultraviolet light available in the wintertime. Significant UV light is only available from the hours of 10AM through 2PM (11-3 daylight savings time). Of course, sunscreen filters most UV light. Even untinted windows filter out most UV light. Your commute to work and back in the morning and afternoon doesn’t help you get the Vitamin D you need.
Many of us simply don’t get outside in the middle of the day. Many adults don’t drink enough milk or eat much fish. If we don’t get outside and don’t take vitamins, there is a very high probability that we have insufficient Vitamin D.
Our stone-age ancestors were hunter/gatherers or farmers and spent most of their time in the sun without a lot of clothes. Our ancestors got ten times the amount of vitamin D that we get today. Today, we spend more and more time inside. When I was a child, parents encouraged children to play outside to get fresh air and sunshine. Today, kids have video games and over 100 TV channels to keep them inside. They are more likely to have karate classes or other activities that are held indoors. People are spending less and less time outside. The rate of rickets among children is triple what it was a few years ago.
Studies on people that spend a lot of time in the sun such as lifeguards and farmers show that they can have twice as much vitamin D in their blood as other people. In recent years, we’ve been repeatedly advised to stay out of the sun and use sunscreen. If we don’t get out in the sun and don’t drink milk or eat fish, there are no other sources of vitamin D. It is the forgotten vitamin.
